We are excited to announce that registration has officially opened for the 2009 Governor’s Nonprofit Leadership Conference (GNLC)!

This year’s GNLC is the second part of a three-year series on social impact. Bearing the theme “Where the Rubber Meets the Road,” this conference boasts two keynote speakers who really understand the importance of social impact:

  • Andrew Wolk, founder of Root Cause. Among Andrew’s many accomplishments are launching the Social Innovation Forum, and developing Social Impact Research Reports and writing the business plan for the first statewide Office of Social Entrepreneurship. He has consulted for nonprofit, for-profit and government organizations. Read Andrew’s blog at AndrewWolk.com.
  • Robert Egger, president of the DC Central Kitchen, which combats hunger while giving people employment opportunities. Robert’s book, Begging for Change, received the 2005 McAdam Prize for “Best Nonprofit Management Book” by the Alliance for Nonprofit Management. He has received numerous additional awards and serves on myriad nonprofit boards. Read Robert’s blog at RobertEgger.org/blog.

Until October 5, 2009, you can get a discounted registration rate. Just go to the Regonline Web site and use the following code: EARLY

You can also get a discounted hotel room from now through November 7, 2009. Get this special rate of only $100 per night, per person, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel here.

Foundations’ Remarkable Return on Investment

July 21st, 2009 - Posted by OneStar Foundation - No Comments

Currently, the U.S. Senate is considering measures to reduce budget shortfalls. Given these recent conversations, we thought it would be interesting to discuss the return on investment that nonprofits generate, and why investing in them is a wise idea.

Recently, OneStar analyzed “The Social and Economic Value of Private and Community Foundations” by Robert Shapiro and Aparna Mathur. According to the study, “…On average, each dollar that private and community foundations provided in grants and support in 2007 produced an estimated return of $8.58 in direct, economic welfare benefits.” This means that nearly $468 billion in direct returns came from an approximately $43 billion investment.

The benefits leveraged by these grants can be seen in both direct and indirect manners, including financially. Shapiro and Mathur note that, in addition to the direct benefits received by clients as a result of nonprofit activities, community and private foundation support also produced additional indirect benefit for communities (through increased household income and job creation) and increased tax revenues for local, state and federal governments (as a result of the economic activity).

OneStar’s Research, Learning and Evaluation team analyzed Shapiro and Mathur’s study and commented on its importance as a call to action for the nonprofit sector. Read our analysis here.

Nonprofit Employees and Student Loans: All May Be Forgiven

July 9th, 2009 - Posted by OneStar Foundation - No Comments

Did you know that nonprofit employees might be eligible to have qualifying student loans forgiven after 10 years of public service employment?

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 gives full-time employees of 501(c)3 organizations (including AmeriCorps members) the opportunity to have loans from the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program or Federal Direct Loan Consolidation Program forgiven under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF) after working in public service for 10 years. There are a few catches, though:

  • Your loan payments must be made under one or more of the following:
    • The Income-Based Repayment plan (IBR).
    • The Income Contingent Repayment plan (ICR).
    • The Standard 10-Year Repayment Plan for student loans.
  • You must make 120 monthly loan payments, starting on October 2007. That means that the earliest qualification date for loan forgiveness is October 2017. Loan payments made before October 2007 do not count toward PSLF.
  • Only loans from the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program or Federal Direct Loan Consolidation Program can be forgiven. (You might be able to consolidate your non-Direct Loan program loans into a qualifying Federal Direct Loan Consolidation Program loan.)

The Web site IBRInfo.org contains a calculator that can help you determine whether or not you may qualify for PSLF.

For more information about PSLF, check out IBRInfo.org’s page of Frequently Asked Questions or “What are these new programs?” page.

Announcing the Community Solutions Agenda

July 1st, 2009 - Posted by OneStar Foundation - No Comments

As we mentioned on our Web site today, President Barack Obama recently announced the Community Solutions Agenda, which includes focusing $650 million of the Recovery Act toward the What Works Fund at the Department of Education. This fund will, in the president’s words, “be investing in the most successful, highest-impact initiatives in our school districts and communities.” At the announcement, the president highlighted several nonprofit organizations that have been achieving quantifiable levels of social impact.

Our colleague Andrew Wolk of Root Cause has a great blog post up here where he describes his experience being present for the Community Solutions Agenda announcement. Wrote Wolk about the program name, “I like the way that sounds. It focuses the conversation on two core elements of this work: ‘community’ and ‘solutions.’”

What did you think of the president’s announcement? What programs do you feel are exceptional examples of social innovation and impact? Be a part of the conversation at Wolk’s blog or in our comments section below.
