What’s the Right AmeriCorps Program for Me?
May 12th, 2009 - Posted by OneStar Foundation
Many people want to participate in AmeriCorps, but are not sure which program is right for them. AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps NCCC each have slightly different eligibility criteria, and each will offer a different service experience.
Before you apply for an AmeriCorps program, consider the following:
- How many hours per week will you be able to devote to your AmeriCorps program?
- Do you want to be involved in direct service, or in behind-the-scenes work?
- Are you able to relocate during your service term, or do you have to stay in your community for the entire duration?
- Do you want to tackle several different challenges during your service time, or focus on just one issue?
- Would you prefer to work as part of a team, or by yourself?
Once you have answered these questions, you’ll be closer to figuring out the right AmeriCorps program for you!
According to AmeriCorps.gov:
- AmeriCorps State and National programs offer thousands of different service opportunities across the country for people ages 17 and older.
- AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) focuses on addressing the challenges of poverty, and is for people ages 18 and older who wish to stay in one community and work as an individual during their service term.
- AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) provide hands-on service to communities (including disaster relief work) across the country, and is for people ages 18-24 who wish to work in teams.
